Covid “Proofing” Your Apartment While You’re Away for the Holidays

Winterize your Off-Campus Apartment

Life with COVID-19 means that if you’re living in one of our Cortland Student Rentals affordable student apartments near SUNY Cortland this holiday season will look a lot different than last year. At Cortland, we like to make sure we help college students with the most important steps of off-campus living; stay safe, healthy, and happy! But what does that look like now? We’re still learning more and more about the most effective ways to stay safe. Today, we’ll be covering a few of our recommendations for COVID “proofing” your apartment.

Clean Thoroughly

Make a mental note of everything someone could touch while living in your student apartment for rent in Cortland like light switches, phones, doorknobs, keyboards, remotes, faucets, handles. You’ll need to disinfect anything you would touch on a daily basis. When cleaning, disinfectants need time to do their job. Leave it on surfaces for 3-5 minutes. The CDC recommends using an EPA-approved disinfectant like Lysol, or Clorox Disinfecting Wipes. You can check out the website for a full list.

Whether you’re moving off-campus for the holidays for the first time, or not, it can be tempting to bring more than you need. Instead of packing everything, prioritize what you’ll need in your apartment. Make a list of what you’ll actually use and don’t bring anything you haven’t worn, used, etc. in the past 6 months. The goal is to only take what you need from one place to the next.

Staying Clean and Healthy Off-campus

Stock up

COVID proofing student apartments for rent near SUNY Cortland requires the following basic tool kit.

  • EPA-approved disinfectants
  • Laundry detergent
  • Garbage bags
  • Prescription medicines and toiletries
  • Canned Foods: beans, fruits, veggies
  • Dry Food: Pastas, bread, nut butters
  • Frozen Food: Meats, fruits, veggies

We understand that most students looking for apartments for rent in Cortland may be on a tight budget. If you can’t find any disinfectant you can also pick up low-splash bleach, and make a bleach solution with 4 teaspoons of bleach per quart of water.

Typically, it’s best to eat a diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables, but you’ll need a nice variety of canned fruits and veggies in your pantry. The holidays are the perfect time for home-baked goodies and to try out new recipes. We want you to break in your new kitchen. Just also add some frozen fruit to your cart. They’re excellent for smoothies and you can also thaw them for a guilt-free holiday snack.

Stay in the loop
