Now is a Good Time to Start Thinking About Next Semesters Living Arrangements

Cortland State off campus housing options 08

As this spring semester ends, and the next college sessions looms, affordable student housing in Cortland remains a challenge for many students. Freshman are usually required to stay on campus in the dorms but then can move into off-campus housing in the subsequent years.

An unfortunate thing that happens is that many freshmen begin the college experience and realize that they need to decide about living arrangements for the following year before they’ve even figured out how to find their current classes.

Plan Now For the Coming Semester

It is always best to start planning and inspecting affordable student housing in Cortland as much in advance as possible.  Do not rely simply on photographs.  We try very hard to depict our apartments as they are. What you see is REALLY what you get. But nothing can replace you actually viewing our apartments up close and personally. We are more than happy to show you the housing options you might be interested in so that you may make the best choice for your needs.

Make sure that you really think about your priorities and what is important to you in your off-campus housing choices. Try not to get feeling rushed or too overwhelmed with the choices and the incentives to sign a lease right away. It’s easy to not notice some important factors.

For example, you should take note of the neighborhood, street, lighting on the street and parking areas. Make note of what parking options are available and whether you will have a designated parking spot.  Without that, you are at the whim of every other student grabbing spots…not fun when there’s a snow storm.

Safety is always extremely important. Make sure your building and apartment are secure and locks are on all doors.

Read your lease closely and see what all is included and what is not. Remember to factor in costs like cable, Internet, trash, utilities, parking and other expenses not included in the monthly rent. Look to see the specific dates of the lease as some may end in early June while others may last until August. The lease term may also impact whether or not you’re allowed to sublet your apartment for the summer or a semester, if you plan on studying abroad. Find out what extra fees the rental agency may also be charging you, especially if you want to try to sublet.

Deciding to live off campus is an important decision.  Cortland Student Rentals is proud to provide the most affordable, safe, and clean apartments in the area. Call or visit us today for your tour and learn more about how off campus housing works for our students.
